Playing jigsaw on Puzzled

Jigsaw controls, drag and tap placement, Edges and layers, hint penalties, saving progress, solo play and room standings.

The guide and all jigsaw tips

Drag or tap to place

The highlighted square has a direct seated neighbour. A diagonal neighbour alone would not open it.
  • Pieces start the right way up. Drag towards the matching position, slow down and release. A piece seats only if its position is right, reachable and clear; another on-board drop leaves it loose.
  • Alternatively, select a tray piece and tap its square. Keyboard users can focus those buttons and activate them with Enter or Space. A tap has no release-speed check.
  • Dashed outlines show reachable positions near a piece carried over the board, or a selected loose piece. A tray selection alone shows none. The outlines show where placement is allowed, not where your fragment belongs.

The picture guide

Preview — tap to play

The picture and tray banner shown before play. This illustration is not a playable board.
  • A new puzzle opens on its full picture. Tap the tray banner labelled Preview — tap to play, or use the picture button to reveal the board.
  • The picture button switches between the reference and the playable board. The reference is not a faint answer underneath your pieces.
  • Reopening the guide after play has started does not pause the clock. Use Pause when you need a break.

Shuffle, Edges and Hint

Frame

Layer 2

Highlighted rings show which pieces Edges looks for, not their tray order. Hint seats a piece and adds a 30-second penalty.
  • Shuffle changes tray order without moving seated pieces or adding a penalty.
  • Edges shows the outermost unfinished ring: the frame first, then Layer 2 and further inward. It switches off when that ring is fully seated; press it again for the next ring. This filter is free.
  • Hint seats one reachable piece from the outermost available ring and adds 30 seconds. Hints are five seconds apart.
  • All three controls are disabled while the picture guide is open or a new picture is loading. Hint and Shuffle are also unavailable while paused.

Loose pieces and saved progress

The parked fragment covers the highlighted square. Move it away before seating the matching piece.
  • A fragment dropped on the board stays loose unless it seats. Drag it again to move it, or drop it off the board to return it to the tray. Its centre can block the square beneath it.
  • Drag along the tray to reorder pieces. The gap shows where a piece will land. Seated pieces, parked positions and tray order are saved with your board.
  • Allow changes to reach the server before closing a tab, especially on an unreliable connection. If the artwork fails to load, Retry picture reloads it without discarding your progress.

The clock and completion

Play time + hint penalty

04:33 + 0:30

4 minutes 33 seconds of play, plus one 30-second hint: ranking uses 5 minutes 3 seconds. The display stays split.
  • A fresh puzzle's initial preview does not start the clock. A board action, such as placing a piece or saving a tray rearrangement, starts it. Pause stops it and hides the playable board.
  • Play time and hint penalties stay separate on screen. Standings show the same split but rank by the total.
  • The final seated piece completes the picture. The server confirms the solve and its time; the frame and result are feedback, not an extra timing rule. A delayed confirmation can hold the next puzzle behind a loader.

Solo play and rooms

Player A

Player B

Same picture and cut, separate progress. Neither player's move fills the other's board.
  • Solo gives you your own puzzle and a New puzzle button. In a room, players on the same round receive the same picture and cut, but each has a separate board. It is a race, not a shared table.
  • Standings compare completed puzzles across the room's series first, then cumulative solve time plus penalties, then current progress.
  • Settings are chosen when creating the series; the deal does not change halfway through. When watching is allowed, spectators see seated progress, not your loose pieces or tray order.
