Tip 4 of 5 · Visual clues

Use more than one clue to match a fragment

The guide and all jigsaw tips

Colour is a useful first filter, but it rarely finishes the job. Compare the direction of a boundary, the texture on either side and the cut edge that meets a seated neighbour.

An abstract picture still has landmarks. A torn edge, a change from smooth paint to a patterned area, or a line crossing a colour block can locate a piece without a recognisable object.

Example 1: Follow a boundary through the cut

Step 1 of 3

Read the whole collage. Notice the directions of the boundaries as well as the colours on either side.

This collage repeats colours in different places. Use the full picture to find the region, then compare how the boundaries continue across the top row into the next piece.

The highlighted square is row 2, column 3. Its top neighbour is seated, so you can test the matching fragment there.

Try it yourself

Try the reasoning yourself. Choose an answer to see the explanation.

Use the collage's boundaries and textures to locate Piece A directly below the seated top row. Reopen the full picture when you need to compare it.

Choose a piece, then tap its square

Untimed practice: nothing here touches your games.

How to spot it faster

  • Follow a line across a piece boundary and compare its direction on both sides.
  • Use shape to reject a candidate, then confirm with the picture.
  • Change clues when a region is repetitive: texture and boundary direction may tell you more than colour.

Common mistakes

Assuming a similar silhouette proves the match

Tabs and blanks help, but confirm the picture too. Small shape differences can be hard to judge at tray size.

Treating piece count as the whole challenge

Piece count is Puzzled's difficulty setting, but the artwork matters too. Repeated patterns and broad low-detail areas can be harder to read at the same count.

Questions

Try it

Choose a 16-piece picture and follow one line or colour boundary across two fragments. Check both the image and the cut before joining them to the seated region.
